Uveitis as an ocular manifestation of syphilis: A case series and literature review

Abstract Syphilis can affect almost any part of the eye and is notorious for mimicking any of the inflammatory ophthalmologic conditions. Ocular syphilitic manifestations can occur at any stage of syphilis and can present as an isolated abnormality or be associated with neurosyphilis. Given that the consequence of a delay in diagnosis of ocular syphilis is the potential risk of permanent eye damage, it is imperative to recognize and appropriately treat ocular syphilis early in its course. Here, we present three cases of uveitis in different stages of syphilis. The first case presented with acute anterior uveitis in a patient of early latent syphilis, the second case presented with posterior uveitis in a case of syphilis of unknown duration in a person living with human immunodeficiency virus. The third case also presented with posterior uveitis in the late latent syphilis phase.
