PSYCHIATRIC GENETIC COUNSELING AND TESTING AND IN THE NETHERLANDS

In the Netherlands, clinical genetics services are well organized for somatic conditions across eight academic medical centers. However, clinical genetic services for adult psychiatric conditions have not yet been established for genetic counseling and genetic testing. At Amsterdam UMC, we initiated psychiatric genetic counseling clinics in 2025, consisting of joint consultations by a clinical geneticist and a psychiatrist. The clinical hours benefit importantly from close collaboration with colleagues from the European Network for Clinical Application in Psychiatric Genomics (ENCAP). In addition, we collaborate with colleagues from other medical specialties within Amsterdam UMC (e.g., cardiology, obesity medicine, neurology, and oncology) in a PRS task force to explore if and how common and rare variant testing can be responsibly implemented in clinical care in the future. In this presentation, we describe the organization of these counseling clinics at Amsterdam UMC, and we present a clinical case as part of this symposium's set of cases illustrating the clinical relevance of genetics in psychiatric care.
