Tackling Multi-Dimensional Challenges of Chagas Disease: The Potential of Open Science

Abstract In a situation of resource scarcity, deciding what scientific research we fund becomes particularly relevant. Recent contributions have provided tools to investigate the relationship between research agendas and socio-environmental needs. In this study we apply a Multi-Criteria Mapping methodology to Chagas disease research, engaging 23 actors -with different roles in policy, advocacy and research in relation to Chagas disease- to identify key dimensions in the search for integrated solutions. We identify six priority areas and assess the role of open science in guiding research towards them. Open science combines the open sharing of data, tools and results with a widening of the collaborative networks that produce science. Participants saw open science as having greater potential than conventional science for strengthening the capacity to respond to social needs.
