After the universal child: Latina counter-archives and pluriversal childhoods

This article challenges the “universal child” as a historically produced technology of knowledge that circulates through developmental frameworks, assessment systems, professional norms, and transnational discourses of quality. Drawing on papelitos guardados from 2020–2025 – saved and remembered fragments from pedagogical, family, observational, and institutional encounters – we develop counter-archival early childhood praxis. Situated in Latina feminist epistemology and informed by diffractive reading, this approach treats materials marginalized by official archives not as contextual supplements but as sources of theory. Across five analytic scenes involving monolingual assessment, autonomy-centered milestones, emotional governance, family knowledge, and quality systems, we show how early childhood institutions function as epistemic infrastructures: they do not merely document children but organize what can be recognized as language, development, professionalism, engagement, and quality. The analysis shows how counter-archival readings can interrupt these infrastructures by exposing their limits and opening possibilities for redistributing interpretive authority toward children, families, educators, and communities, without claiming access to complete or conclusive truths. We argue that the field's future lies not in a more inclusive universal child, but in a pluriversal ethics of childhood, evidence, care, and institutional answerability. Counter-archival praxis therefore asks developmental knowledge to become situated, assessments to account for what they cannot hear, families to be engaged as theorists, professionalism to be redefined as answerability, and quality systems to be remade by the communities they serve.
