Sexual Practices and Behaviours Among Couples Experiencing Infertility: A Scoping Review of the Evidence

Objectives This scoping review explores how infertility influences sexual practices and behaviors in heterosexual couples and how this relationship is addressed in the literature.Methods A systematic search was conducted in PubMed, Web of Science, and Scopus for peer-reviewed studies. Eleven studies were included and synthesized narratively.Results Infertility is associated with reduced sexual frequency, increased timing of intercourse around the fertile window, and a shift toward reproduction-focused sexual activity. Spontaneity and sexual diversity tend to decline, with vaginal intercourse becoming central.Conclusions Infertility appears to reshape sexual behavior, but evidence remains limited.
