Performance Evaluation and Maintenance Cost Analysis of a Pleated Filter Cartridge Technology for Urban Stormwater Management
Abstract Structural control systems with a small footprint are ideal for stormwater management within urban areas. Manufactured treatment devices are one category of structural systems often implemented in highly developed environments. For newer technologies, there are performance studies documented in literature, but the maintenance costs and impacts on performance are generally not well documented. This study analyzes the benefits of routine inspection and maintenance on a Jellyfish Filter’s treatment performance based on water-quality sampling results as well as the costs associated with maintenance activities. Water-quality results for total suspended solids before maintenance indicated treatment were inadequate for this regulated parameter. However, removal efficiencies recovered once maintenance was completed. Removal efficiencies for total lead and zinc were significantly different before and after maintenance, and the efficiency increased after maintenance. The cost of major maintenance that included cartridge replacement averaged $17,918. Routine maintenance, which would at a minimum occur annually, was $4,500. Inspections were the least expensive activity at approximately $400 compared to the maintenance and cleaning.
