Colonoscopy in the diagnosis and treatment of secondary intussusception

To report the utilization of colonoscopy in the diagnosis and management of secondary intussusception. A retrospective analysis was conducted on pediatric patients with intussusception who underwent colonoscopy from 2015 to 2023. Between 2015 and 2023, a total of 63 pediatric patients with intussusception underwent colonoscopy, comprising 34 males and 29 females with an average age of 5.46 ± 2.66 years. The median duration of intussusception symptoms was 2.0 days (range, 0.58 to 7.00), and the median number of air enemas administered was 2 (range, 1 to 4). Abnormalities were detected in 31 cases, while 32 cases showed no abnormalities upon colonoscopy. Among the 31 cases with detected abnormalities, there were 23 instances of juvenile polyps, 5 of Peutz-Jeghers Syndrome, 2 of Burkitt’s lymphoma, and 1 of inflammatory mass. In these 31 cases, 24 underwent polypectomy via colonoscopy, with a total of 56 polyps removed. Colonoscopy may play a diagnostic and therapeutic role in cases of secondary intussusception .
