Cancer survivorship experiences and preferences for mHealth program among colorectal cancer survivors: a qualitative study

Abstract Background Colorectal cancer (CRC) survivors frequently encounter ongoing physical and psychological symptoms and have unmet informational needs after treatment. Mobile health (mHealth) may improve access to survivorship information and support, particularly for survivors with limited access to follow-up care. Evidence on leveraging mHealth to address these multidimensional challenges remains scarce in Vietnam. This study aims to explore cancer survivorship experiences and preferences for the mHealth program among CRC survivors. Methods A qualitative descriptive approach was employed. Individual semi-structured online interviews were conducted between February and April 2025 with 30 CRC survivors who had completed primary treatment in Vietnam. Data were analyzed using inductive thematic analysis. The study was reported in accordance with the COREQ guideline. Results Data were examined using thematic analysis. The participants’ mean age was 59.9 years. Three themes emerged: (1) multidimensional survivorship experiences —physical changes, emotional turmoil, financial challenges, navigating the journey in isolation and searching for spiritual support; (2) supportive care needs —information from reliable sources, support to recognize symptoms of cancer recurrence, reminder for posttreatment follow-up, and health promotion strategies; and (3) mHealth program design —preference for mHealth design, age-related digital support, incorporating cultural elements, and barriers to using mHealth programs. Conclusion The findings aligned with the Cancer Survivorship Care Framework and provided contextualized insights into the multidimensional experiences and supportive care needs of the CRC survivors who participated in the study. Participants expressed preferences for mHealth-based support to address informational and supportive care needs. These findings may inform the future co-design and development of a culturally appropriate mHealth survivorship program involving CRC survivors and relevant healthcare stakeholders.

Mobile health (mHealth) may improve access to survivorship information and support, particularly for survivors with limited access to follow-up care. Evidence on leveraging mHealth to address these multidimensional challenges remains scarce in Vietnam.
