Overcoming the Challenges to Trauma Literacy and Education

A substantial body of research shows that journalists can be negatively impacted by the stories they cover. This necessitates a discussion on how to best teach future journalists to be both prepared for and resilient in the face of trauma. This syndicate focused on trauma literacy as a framework for building awareness, as well as more organized educational support for trauma training. Recommendations include developing an agreed-upon definition of trauma literacy in the context of journalism education, creating teaching materials to increase instructor confidence when teaching trauma literacy, and advocating for the inclusion of trauma literacy in accreditation standards.
