Turn the Canon EOS M5 into a Clean HDMI Camera: Configuring Clean HDMI Output with a Canon Basic Script (Windows/macOS)

The Canon EOS M5 overlays shooting information on its HDMI output, which makes it awkward to use as a webcam. This technical note documents how to obtain clean HDMI output using a Canon Basic script published on the CHDK forum. The camera firmware is not modified, and the effect lasts only until the camera is powered off. The document covers both Windows (EOScard) and macOS. The macOS procedure uses a shell script written for this note: because recent versions of macOS do not permit byte-level writes to partition devices, the script reads and writes the boot sector sector-by-sector on the raw whole-disk device, with safety checks and post-write verification. The note also corrects errors that circulate in online guides — selecting EOS_DEVELOP and BOOTDISK in EOScard, omitting script.req, and failing to state the firmware requirement — on the basis of the CHDK Wiki and the developer's posts, and records the problems encountered during testing (firmware 1.0.0, an exFAT-formatted 128 GB SDXC card, and a multibyte character issue in bash 3.2). Appendices include the EOS M5 Canon Basic script (by srsa_4c), script.req, and the macOS card preparation script. Tested with a Canon EOS M5 (firmware 1.0.2), a 16 GB SDHC card (FAT32), and macOS. Overlay removal was confirmed on the camera's LCD; HDMI output through a capture device has not yet been tested.
