Wear-Triggered Signaling System for Autonomous Activation of Downhole Tools Using Identification Media Released from a Wearing or Failing Surface
Defensive publication under The Prior Art Project, released under CC BY 4.0 so that the disclosed subject matter is free for anyone to practice and cannot be exclusively claimed by any party. This document, prepared in the format of a U.S. provisional patent application, discloses a wear-triggered signaling system for autonomous activation of downhole tools. Sealed canisters of identification media (RFID microtags, magnetically detectable particles, chemical or radioisotope tracers, and equivalents) are embedded in the gauge surface of a drill bit, in a replaceable gauge insert, or within individual PDC cutting elements, at a depth corresponding to a predetermined wear limit. When the surface wears to that limit, the canister is breached and the media are released into the upward annular flow. A receiver that senses the exterior annular flow, either integrated in an expandable reamer or housed in a dedicated sub, detects the media within seconds and autonomously extends the reamer cutters, restoring full gauge at the point where undergauge drilling began, with no surface command. A confirmation batch may be released for surface detection so that transit time computed from pump data timestamps and locates the wear event, and the event may also be forwarded by MWD telemetry. The architecture inverts prior art surface-commanded RFID actuation (for example the Weatherford RipTide family, US 2017/0159363 A1, US 2015/0101864 A1) and closes the loop left open by prior wear-released taggant art (US 10,570,670, US 7,565,928): the signal originates at the point of work and travels bottom-up, exterior to the drill string, rather than top-down through its interior. Additional embodiments disclosed: graduated multi-depth wear reporting; per-cutter wear mapping; reamer self-retraction when its own cutters wear; monitoring of mud motor bearing packs, roller cone bearing seals, bit nozzles, stabilizers, casing shoes and other failing surfaces; shock, vibration, thermal and clock-triggered release including periodic proof-of-life signals; false-positive rejection by coincidence detection and baseline subtraction; coexistence with conventional top-down RFID actuation; surface capture of media by ditch magnet or separator; and a media-borne repeater chain for wells of any depth. Six figures and 27 informal claims are included, with three article-of-manufacture claims (drill bit, gauge insert, cutting element). Inventor: Ernest Newton Sumrall, Shenandoah, Texas, USA.
