The Villages of Arithmetic: A Story of the NumberScape
The Villages of Arithmetic: A Story of the NumberScape explores arithmetic through the metaphor of positional “Villages,” where digit places interact only with their neighbors according to local rules of exchange, memory, comparison, and reconstruction. Beginning with addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division, the story moves to square-root extraction and factorization, showing how seemingly different operations can share a common architecture of local transformations. Two accompanying Illuminations develop the mathematics behind the story. The first connects the Village viewpoint with Expanded Halving and Doubling (EHD) and develops positional recurrences for square-root extraction and paired-square factorization in an arbitrary base. The second, “Changed Visages,” asks what becomes visible when the same number is written in different bases, interpreting divisibility, powers, and perfect powers as features of a changing positional landscape. A concluding Reflection considers the distinction between a number and its representation, and the broader WidiVision idea that changing how an object is represented can reveal relationships already present within it.
