The Almandel and the Problem of Angelic Mediation: Solomonic Attribution, Ritual Cosmology, and Christian Discernment in the Ars Almadel Tradition

The Ars Almadel occupies an unusual position within the textual world later gathered under the title Lemegeton or Lesser Key of Solomon. Unlike the more notorious Goetia, the Almadel tradition is oriented principally toward angelic contact through a portable ritual altar, sacred names, colour correspondences, incense, candles, and a cosmology of celestial regions. This article argues that the historical importance of the Almandel lies less in any credible connection with the historical King Solomon than in the way its manuscript traditions preserve successive attempts to Christianise, rationalise, and regulate ritual contact with the invisible world. By distinguishing Solomonic attribution from provenance, the study traces the Almandel from medieval Latin witnesses into the seventeenth-century Lemegeton, situates its angelic and astral structures within broader currents of medieval ritual magic and Renaissance cosmology, and compares its logic with the angelic experiments of John Dee. Particular attention is given to the theological problem of discernment: if a ritual claims to invoke an angel by divine names, what warrants the identity of the appearing intelligence, and can a creature of God be compelled through material signs? The article concludes that the Almandel is best read as an archive of contested religious imagination rather than as evidence of an ancient Solomonic rite.
