The Letter from Jamaica. Simón Bolívar's Arguments Then and Now

The present paper is on the reception of Bolívar’s Letter from Jamaica in modern academic thought, with a focus on some aspects of the image of El Libertador and his ideology. Five journal articles published in the last decade are taken as a basis for a comparison of some of his key ideas from the Letter with their scholarly interpretations in the articles in review – with the purpose to detect whether or not, and eventually the extent to which, the way Bolívar and his Jamaican ideology are presented and understood by modern scholars deviates from Bolívar’s own ideas from 1815.
