FACET: Fuel-Adaptive Control Evidence & Transferability — research program, portfolio and evidence log
FACET is an independent research program on fuel-property-adaptive fuel injection control for heavy-duty and off-highway compression-ignition engines, and on the verification evidence and cross-program applicability criteria that would allow such control to reach production. The premise. A compression-ignition engine is certified once, on a test fuel fixed by 40 CFR 1065.703, and then operated for thousands of hours on whatever the market supplies. The fuels the market supplies are not required to resemble the certification fuel on most of the properties that govern the injection event. Paraffinic renewable diesel to EN 15940 occupies a density envelope of 765–800 kg/m³ against the certification fuel's 838.9–864.6 kg/m³ — envelopes that do not overlap at all. Injection systems meter volume, so delivered fuel mass scales with density. The two questions. Q1, technical: can injection control adapt to actual fuel properties closely enough to close the certified-to-in-service gap, and what must it sense to do so? Q2, methodological: what verification evidence would allow such control to reach production, and under what criteria can evidence generated for one engine program be legitimately reused for another? Q2 is the program's centre of gravity. Contents of this deposit. The program statement (agenda, method commitments, and the conditions under which the program would be wrong), the project register with each project's status recorded against an explicit vocabulary that permits no skipped steps, the evidence log, and the program page as published. Status at this version. Three projects are verified and public, and each resolves to a DOI: CIDEX, a harmonized panel of EPA compression-ignition certification records (10.5281/zenodo.22761791); FUELDIV, a specification divergence register for the certification and in-market fuel requirements (10.5281/zenodo.22833312); and the Fuel Divergence Atlas, state-level estimates of how far the in-service diesel pool has moved from the certification fuel (10.5281/zenodo.22833317). All three carry technical manuscripts, and CIDEX's data paper is posted as an open-access preprint at 10.31224/8233. The Atlas passed its verification gate after this program's previous version was deposited; it was republished as a corrected version after the author found that it carried cetane ceilings no standard states, and the superseded version remains resolvable. Three further projects are not started. Every constituent project now meets the vocabulary's 'Published' bar, which requires a resolving DOI. Built entirely from openly available federal data. Self-funded. Published openly.
