Abstract

This deposit contains a scan of an original feature article written by William Hunt and published in the Long Island Sunday Press on January 1, 1961. While the 1960s headline contains media exaggeration regarding the starting age (experimentation with analog circuitry began independently at around age 5.5 rather than age 2) as well as some other errors, the photograph clearly documents that by age 10, the subject was using oscilloscopes, doing chassis work and soldering, working with tubes, and building things. He was also learning advanced mathematics and loved hanging out in radio repair shops and Radio Row (Cortland Street, NY) surplus electronics stores. This historical artifact is directed at researchers reading the author's recent mathematical paper on Functionplane (hosted at https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.22179765), where it is formally cited in the "Origin Story" section. It may help historians and philosophers of science interested with understanding how early backgrounds (here radio and electronics, and later mathematics, GR, and other fields) make possible later scientific discoveries. The artifact, together with his later work (including Functionplane), may be useful to those investigating the "Sleeping Beauty" phenomena in the history of science. The underlying mathematics of Functionplane was originally formulated in 1970, implemented in Fortran in 1973, and integrated into NT-SYS for oblique factor rotation in the mid-1970s. Because it employed a smooth simplicity criterion (modern terminology: soft sparsity), implicitly embedded in a manifold and serving as the target of optimization, it anticipated modern machine learning regularization and brittleness issues by half a century. It fell dormant due to its design (alien to statisticians and psychometricians of its era), and to siloing within the fields of factor analysis and psychometrics. Additionally, machine learning and other relevant fields did not exist until decades later. This scan is provided strictly for non-commercial, academic, and historical research under Fair Use Guidelines. The Long Island Sunday Press permanently ceased operations in 1977. This digital preservation carries no commercial market impact and serves no pecuniary goals, acting solely as a permanent, timestamped biographical validation.
