Parental age, consanguinity, parity, and mode of delivery among children undergoing orchidopexy for cryptorchidism: a retrospective cohort study from Northern Jordan

AIMS: Cryptorchidism is a common congenital male genitourinary anomaly with multifactorial etiology. Data on parental age, consanguinity, parity, and delivery mode among affected children in Middle Eastern populations remain limited. This study evaluated the distribution of these factors among children undergoing orchidopexy in Northern Jordan. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A retrospective study was conducted at Princess Rahma Teaching Hospital, Northern Jordan, including males aged 1-11 years who underwent orchidopexy for cryptorchidism between January 2016 and July 2024. Data were obtained from medical records and supplemented by structured telephone interviews. RESULTS: The study included 446 patients. Mean paternal and maternal ages were 34.5 ± 7 and 28.5 ± 6.6 years, respectively. Consanguinity was reported in 27.6% of families, 58.3% of births were vaginal deliveries, and 53.6% of families had ≥3 children. Fathers aged ≥40 years accounted for 24% of the cohort, whereas mothers aged ≥35 years represented 18.2%. Consanguineous families had lower paternal age (p = 0.044) and more frequently had parity >5 (11% vs. 3%, p = 0.013). CONCLUSIONS: Distinct demographic patterns involving consanguinity, paternal age, and parity were observed among children with cryptorchidism in Northern Jordan, supporting the need for further controlled regional studies.
