Range extension of woolly flying squirrel ( Eupetaurus cf. nivamons ) in Arunachal Pradesh, India

Abstract The woolly flying squirrels of the genus Eupetaurus , belonging to the family Sciuridae, are the rarest and one of the least studied endangered mammals, found only in restricted areas of the Himalayan region. Here, we report the first record of Eupetaurus cf. nivamons from western Arunachal Pradesh, India. The species was recorded once at an elevation of 4,390 m, in a camera trap. The identification is based solely on photographs and therefore poses some doubt. This finding represents a significant eastward range extension of woolly squirrels and fills a critical distributional gap in the Eastern Himalaya, India.
