Beyond classroom averages: individual quality experiences as proximal predictors of prekindergarten children’s development

Theoretical frameworks in early childhood education posit that children’s development is shaped through proximal, reciprocal interactions, yet empirical associations between classroom-level quality and child outcomes remain modest and inconsistent. This “quality-outcome puzzle” may reflect a mismatch between theory and dominant measurement and research design. The present study tests this proposition by simultaneously examining quality at the classroom level (Classroom Assessment Scoring System) and the individual level (Quality Exposure Index). Participants were 175 racially diverse prekindergartners (M age = 4.41 years; 46.3% female) in 26 classrooms. Bayesian multilevel models tested the degree to which individual-level quality predicted developmental outcomes beyond classroom-level quality. Children within the same classroom experienced markedly different quality, with variation often exceeding that across classrooms. Individual-level quality predicted outcomes across multiple domains, particularly vocabulary (β = 0.08-0.16) and task orientation (β = 0.18-0.22), while classroom-level quality showed null associations. An asymmetric attenuation pattern emerged: classroom-level coefficients diminished when individual-level quality was included, whereas individual-level coefficients remained stable. Weak quality-outcome associations in prior research may stem from measuring quality at a level that does not capture the theorized mechanism of influence. These findings suggest that complementing classroom-level monitoring with measures sensitive to individual children's experiences may help explain inconsistent quality-outcome associations in the field.
