Introducing action learning to Philippine public school teachers: insights, struggles and surprises
This Account of Practice (AoP) shares our team's journey of implementing the Action Learning Professional Development Framework (AL-PDF), a structured variant of Action Learning (AL), in a resource-constrained Philippine public high school. While AL is praised for its problem-solving efficacy, its application in such contexts is not automatic. We detail how we translated the framework from its origins in research-skills development for scientists to address authentic classroom challenges for high school teachers. We explore the dynamics that shaped fidelity and engagement of the teachers to AL, from the tangible success of feasible strategies to the profound constraints of time, administrative load, and a culture of compliance. We conclude not with a heroic success story, but with context-specific principles for designing feasible, focused, and sustainable AL initiatives that prioritize practical skill development and tangible classroom results.
