Mapping research support services in university libraries of Pakistan: an assessment through university library websites

The purpose of this study is to map the content of each university library’s website to determine the current status and types of research support services (RSS) provided by HEC-charted public and private university libraries in Pakistan. A sequential mixed-methods strategy was employed. Initially, a content analysis was performed on the websites of 208 HEC-recognized university libraries chosen from a total of 261 public and private universities in Pakistan. During the second phase, comprehensive interviews were carried out with eight library professionals to investigate challenges associated with RSS provision. The results indicate that university libraries exhibited a high level of provision of HEC digital library resources, OPAC, and e-resource facilities, while other RSS were observed at an initial level. The qualitative findings revealed significant challenges, including insufficient funds, a lack of trained workers, and technological constraints toward advanced RSS deployment. The research indicates that Pakistani university libraries are in the preliminary phase of delivering extensive RSS. The results have practical consequences for university administrations, library professionals, and policymakers in enhancing a research support infrastructure, staff development, and further strategic planning to maximize RSS provision.
