Abstract

This article traces the transformation of the conservatory's cultural meaning and social functions across five historical periods: from the "orange house" of the 17th–18th centuries as a symbol of aristocratic power over nature, through the bourgeois and scientific conservatories of the 19th century, to the public educational spaces of the 20th century and the biophilic atriums of the 21st century. The study argues that the evolution of the conservatory was not a linear rejection of the representative function but a complex transformation of symbolic capital: from demonstrating power over nature to demonstrating responsibility toward nature and technological superiority. The analysis draws on cultural history, semiotics, architectural studies, and the sociology of Pierre Bourdieu.
