A new species of Mesanopin Enderlein, 1912 and notes on variation in Afrotropical and Oriental signal flies of the subfamily (Diptera; Platystomatidae: Plastotephritinae)

Examination of freshly caught specimens of Plastotephritinae not only help to overcome one of the limitations of previous revisions, which were impeded by a shortage of specimens, but also provide new insight to the distributions of species previously thought to be restricted to small endemic enclaves - a direct result of drawing conclusions based on few specimens. In this paper, new records are listed for twenty-nine species of Plastotephritinae and knowledge of the distributions improved. Keys to species of Atopocnema Enderlein, 1922, Mesanopin Enderlein, 1912, Oeciotypa Hendel, 1914 and Xyrogena Whittington, 2003 are revised based on new insight from recent field caught specimens, often in considerably better condition than old preserved material. A new species, Mesanopin morum sp. n., from Togo is described and illustrated.
