Institutional Readiness and the Adoption of Green Practices for Sustainability Among Academic Libraries in the Federal Capital Territory, Nigeria
The study examined institutional readiness as a determinant of green practice adoption for sustainability among academic libraries in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, Nigeria. A descriptive survey design of the correlational type was employed, and total enumeration sampling yielded 165 valid responses from academic librarians across universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education in the FCT. Data were collected through a structured questionnaire administered both online via Google forms and in person. Data were analysed using descriptive and inferential statistics. Findings showed that low-cost operational practices notably e-resource adoption, natural ventilation, and energy-efficient lighting were widely implemented, whilst capital-intensive measures such as rainwater harvesting and solar-powered devices remained largely absent. In terms of the level of adoption, digital services integration returned the highest mean (M = 3.51), whilst solar and rainwater systems fell in the moderate range (M = 2.19 and M = 2.04, respectively). Institutional readiness was found to be high overall (aggregate mean = 2.76) Pearson correlation analysis confirmed a statistically significant positive relationship between institutional readiness and green practice adoption (r = .421, p < .001, r² = .177), indicating that institutional readiness accounts for approximately 18% of the variance in adoption. The null hypothesis was rejected. These findings highlighted the need for dedicated sustainability funding, formal policy frameworks, and targeted capacity-building programmes to translate institutional willingness into consistent practice.
