The Founder's Paradox in Sports Governance: How Founders Can Preserve Institutional Purpose Without Turning Stewardship into Permanent Control
Founders play an essential role in creating sports institutions. They establish the original mission, accept early risks, mobilize relationships and provide the personal commitment that allows a new organization to survive. Yet the same concentration of authority that supports institutional formation can later obstruct independent oversight, leadership renewal and orderly succession. This policy paper defines this tension as the “Founder’s Paradox”: the founder may remain an important source of purpose, institutional memory and legitimacy while continued personal control prevents the organization from developing an independent institutional life. Drawing upon stewardship theory, agency theory, organizational-imprinting research, founder-succession scholarship and international sports-governance standards, the paper proposes a Founder Stewardship Compact. The framework separates five legitimate rights of responsible foundership—recognition, purpose protection, institutional memory, procedural voice and orderly succession—from powers that should not belong permanently to any founder. The proposed restrictions include no immunity from ethics or disciplinary rules; no unilateral appointment authority; no automatic commercial advantage for founders, family members or connected entities; no interference in technical, selection, safeguarding, integrity or disciplinary decisions; and no power to obstruct succession merely to preserve personal authority. Every special founder right must satisfy four conditions: it must be purpose-linked, bounded, independently reviewable and non-self-dealing. The paper also examines the role of founding families, independent boards, term limits, conflicts of interest and institutional succession. It provides a model Founder Stewardship Charter, a governance diagnostic, an implementation roadmap, a board-resolution checklist and a public-disclosure template. The framework is intended for sports federations, leagues, clubs, governing bodies and development organizations transitioning from founder-led formation to accountable institutional maturity.
