Is Westminster’s time coming to an end? A new alliance of the Celtic nations

Last Monday in Cardiff the leaders of the ruling nationalist parties in Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales (my own country) held a joint press conference and signed a memorandum of understanding. They affirmed the right of our nations to self-determination, declared that our future belonged in the European Union, and called on the British Government to respect democracy and prepare the way for constitutional change. “For people watching across these islands – for people watching around the world – there could be no clearer sign that Westminster’s time is coming to an end”. The event had strong symbolic value and visibility, attracting wide coverage in the international press.

Abstract

Last Monday in Cardiff the leaders of the ruling nationalist parties in Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales (my own country) held a joint press conference and signed a memorandum of understanding. They affirmed the right of our nations to self-determination, declared that our future belonged in the European Union, and called on the British Government to respect democracy and prepare the way for constitutional change. “For people watching across these islands – for people watching around the world – there could be no clearer sign that Westminster’s time is coming to an end”. The event had strong symbolic value and visibility, attracting wide coverage in the international press.
