Preparing Meaning for Contingency: Rethinking Reading in the Age of AI

As artificial intelligence makes polished explanations, summaries, and other knowledge-like artifacts increasingly abundant, the value of reading cannot be understood only as the acquisition of already articulated knowledge. This essay proposes a complementary view. Reading prepares a repertoire through which future encounters may become meaningful. It enlarges the range of things that can later appear as questions, relations, analogies, and objects worthy of attention. To describe a second mode of learning that begins not from an already articulated problem but from an encounter with an unsettled world, the essay introduces the provisional term contingency-mediated learning. Such learning occurs when prior conceptual preparation meets an unplanned encounter and gives rise to perplexity, relation-recognition, hypothesis, or aesthetic arrest. The argument is developed through examples involving trust and distrust, self-reinforcing power, dynamical-systems language, mathematical beauty, and the political imagination of the starry sky. The essay distinguishes this proposal from established theories of generative learning, argues that contingency can disclose both problems and possible relations, and places aesthetic judgment near the beginning rather than the end of inquiry. It concludes that reading and encounter are not rival methods. Reading can prepare meaning for contingency; contingency can return questions to reading. In an age of abundant answers, this recursive relation may become increasingly important for preserving the human capacity to recognize what is worth asking.
