Youth Migration and Economic Opportunity in Kyrgyzstan

This study examines how salaries, employment opportunities, education, working conditions, and quality of life influence young people’s decisions about whether to remain in Kyrgyzstan or pursue opportunities abroad. Data were collected through an online survey of 50 young respondents between September 12 and September 17, 2026. The results show that 46% of respondents would prefer to leave Kyrgyzstan temporarily and later return, while 16% would move abroad permanently, 28% remain undecided, and 10% plan to stay. A higher standard of living was the most frequently selected reason for considering life abroad. The United States was the most popular destination for study or work. Seventy-four percent of respondents indicated that a monthly salary of at least 100,000 Kyrgyz som could encourage them to build their careers in Kyrgyzstan. Half considered finding a good job with limited experience difficult or very difficult. The findings suggest that competitive salaries, entry-level employment, career development, better working conditions, and return opportunities could reduce permanent youth emigration. Because this study uses a small convenience sample concentrated in Bishkek and Talas Region, its findings should be interpreted as descriptive rather than nationally representative.
