Global Automotive Industry Development and Economic Impact

The automotive industry is a major component of the global industrial economyand a central driver of manufacturing, trade, employment, and technologicaldevelopment. This paper reviews the historical evolution of vehiclemanufacturing from craft production to mass production and digitally integratedmobility systems. It examines the industry’s economic contribution throughdirect manufacturing activity, extensive supplier networks, exports, investment,and skilled employment. The paper also considers the structural transitiontoward electric vehicles, connected systems, artificial intelligence, andlow-carbon production. Key challenges include high research and developmentcosts, supply-chain exposure, regulatory pressure, infrastructure requirements,and intense international competition. The review concludes that futurecompetitiveness will depend on the ability of manufacturers and nationaleconomies to combine scale, innovation, workforce development, resilientsupply networks, and environmental sustainability.
