Abstract

The goal of this project is to use Open Street Map (OSM) to introduce students to open data and science through the critical evaluation of closed vs. open mapping platforms and the experience of adding data to OSM. Open Street Map is a global map developed and maintained by a community of volunteers who add features (e.g. buildings, roads) and other related data to it. This project is still in progress and designed as a set of six modules that can be completed separately or as a sequence by a broad audience including adult learners, high school and college students with no previous mapping experience. The materials provided include an overview video, and related slides, a document describing the modules with their facilitation guide, a map comparison tool, and a document with related resources. I welcome comments and feedback on this work. The linked map comparison tool is a file "osm-google-compare.html" that needs to be downloaded and opened within a browser. Version 2 includes an example introductory laboratory exercise.
