Abstract

Part I of Event Engineering described the event before it is engineered: a lived temporal sequence in which a person enters, executes, encounters emerging conditions, searches for an exit, and eventually leaves. Part II examines the next structural question: how does the exit become visible to the participant in the first place? The central observation is that an exit does not become cognitively or practically significant merely because an objective possibility of leaving exists. Its relevance often emerges through participation in the event itself. As execution unfolds, relationships change, commitments accumulate, expectations are revised, constraints become clearer, and previously insignificant possibilities may acquire the meaning of an exit. The participant therefore does not simply discover a door that was already known. Rather, the event changes what counts as a way out. Drawing on research on ethnographic disengagement, role exit, the dissolution of social relationships, and Albert Hirschman's classic distinction between exit and voice as responses to decline, this paper examines exit as an emergent recognition rather than merely a terminal state. Ethnographic research shows that leaving a field can become a relational process whose conditions are produced through participation. Role-exit theory similarly describes movement from initial doubts through the search for alternatives and a turning point toward formal exit. Hirschman's own later analysis of the 1989 East German emigration shows the same structure operating at the scale of an entire state: an exit option that had existed in a limited and costly form for decades became visible and usable to hundreds of thousands of people only when specific conditions changed. These literatures do not formulate the problem as Event Engineering does, but they provide empirical material for examining how the significance of exit emerges from inside an ongoing event. Part II therefore does not yet ask how exit should be designed before entry. That question belongs to a later stage of the series. Its purpose is narrower: to establish that the discovery of exit is itself part of execution, and that the moment at which exit becomes visible may depend on what has already happened inside the event. The central thesis is therefore: "The exit becomes visible from inside the event when execution changes the participant's understanding of the situation." "An exit may exist before it is recognized as an exit."
