The Thirty-Six Stratagems as a Cognitive Vulnerability Framework: Reinterpreting Classical Strategy Through Cognitive Science and Behavioral Economics
The Thirty-Six Stratagems are commonly interpreted as a collection of tactics for warfare, political maneuvering, negotiation, and competitive strategy. This paper proposes an alternative but complementary interpretation: many of the stratagems can be understood as practical manipulations of recurring features of human cognition and decision making. Rather than claiming that the historical compilers of the Thirty-Six Stratagems possessed a theory equivalent to modern cognitive science, the present study treats the collection as an accumulated set of behavioral observations that can be redescribed using contemporary concepts from cognitive psychology, behavioral economics, decision science, and research on strategic deception. A conceptual mapping of all 36 stratagems is developed around six mechanism families: attention and salience control, expectation and belief shaping, valuation and incentive shaping, cognitive-state manipulation, social and trust manipulation, and choice-set or environmental constraint. These mechanisms are further organized within a decision process in which strategic interventions alter what an actor notices, believes, values, and is able or inclined to do. The analysis also identifies important boundary cases: several stratagems operate primarily through resource allocation, timing, positional advantage, or constraint rather than through cognitive bias. Thus, the Thirty-Six Stratagems should not be reduced to a catalogue of biases. Instead, they may be interpreted as a broader catalogue of interventions into human decision environments. This framework suggests applications in decision education, misinformation resistance, negotiation analysis, cybersecurity, organizational behavior, and the study of adversarial cognition.
