Professional Alpha: A Working Definition

Professional Alpha is defined as the excess value created by professional judgement beyond competent technical delivery, where that excess cannot adequately be explained by process, position, information or technology. This short working note establishes a dated public record of the definition and its development. It sets Professional Alpha alongside two established uses of “alpha” in adjacent fields, Vanguard’s Adviser’s Alpha and McKinsey’s CEO Alpha, and explains how the concept differs from both. The note also places Professional Alpha in relation to Compensated Organisational Debt and the Departure Date Test, two related concepts developed by Mark Buck concerning the dependence of organisational outcomes on individual professional judgement.
