The Shemsu Hor Hypothesis: A Continuation – What Egypt Remembered
Paper III completes the core argument of the Zep Tepi Series. Paper I identified the Richat Structure in Mauritania as the sole surviving candidate Saharan origin site, by eliminating twenty-one formations against four criteria — scale sufficient to support a population, documented Holocene water, human presence in that window, and a central elevation rising from that water — within the Mauritanian prehistoric sequence surveyed by Vernet (1993, 1996). Paper II documented genomic endpoints at both corridor termini (Takarkori → Nuwayrat) and the Wedjat as a sky-schema encoding the Canopus gradient observed during northeastward migration. Egypt itself preserved a consistent answer to the question of its origins: the Shemsu Hor (Followers of Horus). They occupy a non-optional structural slot in Egyptian king-list architecture across fifteen centuries of independent sources: the Turin Royal Canon, Pyramid Texts, state inscriptions, and temple-building traditions. Later pharaohs cite their written annals. Ptolemaic builders at Dendera cite a leather roll from their time containing architectural plans. The Palermo Stone, centuries older than the Turin Canon, sets predynastic rulers of Lower Egypt before the dynastic sequence and carries the Shemsu Hor festival in every second year-cell — read by Hertz (1931) as an incipient era. Of the comparative traditions surveyed here — Sumerian, Babylonian, Hittite, Vedic and Chinese — only the Shemsu Hor are invoked in scribal accountability contexts as custodians of recoverable archives. Four primary lines of evidence: Archaeological: Five Saharan pastoral markers appear together at the HK6 elite cemetery at Hierakonpolis within the 3800–3100 BCE window. The marker bearing most directly on population movement is skeletal morphological diversity, since skeletal variation cannot arrive through trade or cultural borrowing alone; here the evidence is suggestive rather than decisive, and rests on the 45 Hierakonpolis crania analysed by Zakrzewski and Powell (2011). Astronomical: A statistically significant Canopus orientation family appears across 350+ Egyptian temples (Shaltout & Belmonte surveys), tracking precession over 2,000 years — a pattern whose cultural significance the survey authors themselves record as an open question in the literature. Chronological: Three independent chronologies (climate, textual, archaeological) converge on the 3800–3100 BCE window, whose lower bound rests on the Bayesian radiocarbon model for the start of the First Dynasty (Dee et al. 2013). Textual: The Shemsu Hor are a fixed category in the king-list tradition, structurally positioned between the gods and the first human kings. The Edfu Building Texts (Reymond 1969; Kurth 1998) corroborate rather than supply independent primary evidence: a cosmogonic narrative of a first sacred domain, its destruction, and its re-founding by divine builders who carry sacred-construction knowledge forward. Six methodologically independent fields — paleohydrology, genetics, archaeology, archaeoastronomy, textual criticism, and climate chronology — converge on the Saharan corridor migration model as the most parsimonious available explanation for the attested data. The model does not claim demonstration. The skeletal evidence is consistent with population movement without establishing it, and the paper sets out the decisive tests, all of which can be run on existing museum collections: isotopic and aDNA analysis of Predynastic elite contexts, geochemical sourcing of Naqada II hard-stone vessels against the Richat carbonatite signature, and A-Group aDNA.
