Topical steroid withdrawal: old problem, new terminology, and diagnostic inflation in the social-media era

Topical steroid withdrawal is increasingly discussed in clinical practice and online, but the label is often applied to several different post-steroid presentations. This letter argues for a balanced approach that recognises possible withdrawal reactions while applying a diagnosis of TSW only when exposure history, phenotype and temporal sequence are compatible and diagnostic mimics have been actively reconsidered.

Abstract

Topical steroid withdrawal is increasingly discussed in clinical practice and online, but the label is often applied to several different post-steroid presentations. This letter argues for a balanced approach that recognises possible withdrawal reactions while applying a diagnosis of TSW only when exposure history, phenotype and temporal sequence are compatible and diagnostic mimics have been actively reconsidered.
