Eliciting intuitive abilities in the creative agency of Lecoq trained theatre makers
Despite the growth of Lecoq studies over the past decade, and frequent references to the intuitive dimension of Lecoq’s training, no research has directly examined this foundational yet elusive aspect or its role in creative process. Although intuition is widely recognised as central to creativity, it remains difficult to access because it is immediate, variable, and dynamic, engaging cognitive, imaginative, affective, and sensorimotor systems in a loop of ‘synaesthetic resonance’. To better understand this phenomenon as lived in Lecoq-trained practice, I conducted a micro-phenomenological inquiry placing my own creative experience in dialogue with detailed accounts from eight Lecoq-trained theatre makers. This methodology enables access to embodied, pre-reflective know-how through fine-grained analysis of diachronic and synchronic dimensions of lived experience. The findings extend across practical, pedagogical, and epistemological domains. They illuminate how Lecoq’s first-year training raises awareness of intuitive capacities, fosters trust in emergent impulses, and nurtures deeply embodied abilities essential for generating creative propositions. Grounded in lived experience, this research offers substantial new insight into the mechanisms through which Lecoq’s pedagogy cultivates intuitive creativity.
