Hope leadership at the intersection of compassion and strategy: building an integrative framework to address volatility and uncertainty

Purpose This study proposes an integrative framework for hope leadership as an intersectional practice that bridges strategic and compassionate leadership. The framework integrates emotional, cognitive and critical hope as a conceptual model which engages an inclusive approach to strategy and compassion. Design/methodology/approach In response to the question posed as to what leadership models or frameworks best capture the intersection of these two approaches, this conceptual paper, uses Education as an illustrative example for the need to balance strategy and care through hope, with implications for future research and practice. Findings This paper reframes the liminality between strategic leadership and compassionate leadership through an integrative framework for hope leadership as an intersectional practice of strategy and compassion. Originality/value The study develops a new model for integrative hope leadership as a conceptually original contribution to considerations of strategy and compassion in leadership practice.
