Comparison of hematological parameters in adults with and without jaundice

Abstract Objective To determine whether hematological parameters differ between jaundiced and non-jaundiced adults. Results A hospital-based analytical cross-sectional study was conducted among 52 adults, including 26 clinically diagnosed jaundiced patients and 26 age- and sex-matched non-jaundiced controls. Hemoglobin, white blood cell count, red blood cell count, platelet count, packed cell volume, mean corpuscular volume, and mean corpuscular hemoglobin were compared between groups using the independent samples t -test. The mean age was 46.30 ± 13.56 years in both groups. Compared with controls, patients with jaundice had significantly higher white blood cell counts and significantly lower red blood cell count, hemoglobin, packed cell volume, and platelet count (all p ≤ 0.001). No significant differences were observed in mean corpuscular volume or mean corpuscular hemoglobin. These findings indicate that adults with jaundice exhibit significant hematological alterations characterized by leukocytosis, anemia, reduced packed cell volume, and thrombocytopenia, supporting the value of routine complete blood count assessment in their clinical evaluation.
