Straightforward Syntheses of Alloys and Core–Shell Nanoparticles: The Benefits of Surfactant-Free Alcohol-Mediated Strategies Illustrated with Au–Ag Nanomaterials

Abstract Core–shell nanoparticles present unique properties that their monometallic counterparts do not express. Unfortunately, the simple and environmentally friendly preparation of such advanced structures is challenging. A method that bypasses typical challenges in the synthesis of such materials is proposed based on a room-temperature monoalcohol-mediated synthesis without the need for surfactants. The concept is demonstrated with the straightforward synthesis of gold–silver alloys and core–shell nanostructures. The results pave the way for complex materials obtained by more sustainable surfactant-free approaches.

Abstract

Abstract Core–shell nanoparticles present unique properties that their monometallic counterparts do not express. Unfortunately, the simple and environmentally friendly preparation of such advanced structures is challenging. A method that bypasses typical challenges in the synthesis of such materials is proposed based on a room-temperature monoalcohol-mediated synthesis without the need for surfactants. The concept is demonstrated with the straightforward synthesis of gold–silver alloys and core–shell nanostructures. The results pave the way for complex materials obtained by more sustainable surfactant-free approaches.
