Digital peace journalism in East Asia: Navigating conflict reporting in a hybrid media landscape

This study examines how peace journalism is practised and adapted in digital media environments across East Asia. Drawing on semi-structured interviews with 53 journalists from South Korea, Japan, Taiwan and Hong Kong, it analyzes how practitioners integrate digital tools, navigate structural constraints and sustain ethical conflict reporting. A hybrid inductive–deductive thematic analysis reveals that journalists employ blended methodologies combining traditional reporting with digital affordances such as social media witnessing and data journalism. The findings underscore the role of institutional support and collaborative infrastructures, as well as the resilience of journalists operating under censorship.
