Ethical decision-making in online supervision of counselors-in-training: A practice-oriented framework

Online supervision is a routine component of counselor training, requiring supervisors to make ethical judgments when information may be incomplete or difficult to interpret. Although perceptual uncertainty is not unique to online supervision, technology-mediated environments may affect the clarity, timing, completeness, or context of available information. This conceptual article introduces the Technology-Informed Ethical Decision-Making Framework, which centers technological context and perceptual uncertainty as key influences on supervisory judgment. The framework supports a more deliberate interpretation of clinically meaningful concerns versus technology-related distortion or incomplete information. Case illustrations demonstrate application, and empirical evaluation is needed.
