Abstract

Now is the most immediate feature of experience, yet it appears nowhere in the equationsof physics. A prominent conclusion drawn from this absence is the block universeposition: that Now has no privileged physical reality, and that past, present and futuremoments exist with equal ontological status. This paper argues that the argument fromabsence commits a specific and identifiable error — conflating absence frommeasurement results with absence from reality. The error is identifiable because it recursin three independent physical cases where it is demonstrably wrong. A mirror cannotreflect itself. A ruler cannot measure its own length with its own markings. A clock cannotdetect its own proper time rate change from within. In each case the instrument exists, isessential to the process it serves, cannot appear in its own results, and its absence isstructural rather than evidential.A unified epistemological principle is proposed: when the instrument and the standard areone and the same thing, self-measurement is not blocked — it is simply meaningless. Becausethe principle is easily over-applied, the paper is equally concerned with its boundary. Acomoving clock and a comoving thermometer both return rest readings, but for differentreasons: the clock's null result conceals a real cross-frame rate relationship, so theprinciple is required to explain it, whereas the thermometer's null result reflects thegenuine absence of any proper change, and the principle is neither required norapplicable. Marking that boundary is what keeps the principle from becoming anunfalsifiable device for explaining away every null measurement. A closely parallelobservation disposes of the argument from absence more directly still: no equation ofphysics contains a variable for "here," yet no one concludes that particular places areunreal. The absence of a privileged t reflects the generality of physical law, not theunreality of the present. The Rietdijk-Putnam argument for the block universe is addressed directly. The relativityof simultaneity establishes that coordinate Now is observer-dependent, but says nothingabout proper Now — the local ground of energy transformation — which is not relative. Now's absence from the equations is not the signature of its unreality. It is the signatureof its fundamentality.
