The fourth fulcrum: Provenance as Structural Condition

The Invisible Fulcrum Framework (García Bach & Hypatia, 2026) establishes three conditions for sustainable leverage in the age of artificial intelligence: verifiable material existence, demonstrable epistemic credibility, and earned relational trust. This paper argues that all three presuppose a fourth they cannot produce: provenance — the verifiable chain of acts in time whose retrospective falsification becomes radically more costly as independent temporal anchors accumulate. The argument proceeds in four steps: it is shown that the original three fulcrums are insufficient against a case that satisfies all of them (§1); the economics of verification is established through a field case (§2); the structural vulnerability of every verification chain — the joints — is identified through an AI security case (§3); and the distinction between artifact verification and agent provenance is drawn through a contemporary mathematical case (§4). This paper extends the three-fulcrum framework presented in Volume I by arguing for a fourth structural condition.
