Bone mineral density, body composition, sex hormone levels, and insulin sensitivity in patients with Polyendocrine Metabolic Ovarian Syndrome
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate bone mineral density (BMD), body composition, sex hormone levels, and insulin sensitivity in women with Polyendocrine Metabolic Ovarian Syndrome (PMOS) and compare these parameters with those of women without the syndrome. METHODS: This cross-sectional study included 51 women with PMOS diagnosed according to the Rotterdam criteria and 30 women without the syndrome. Clinical characteristics, hormonal and metabolic profiles, body composition, and dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry-derived BMD were assessed. Women with PMOS were also stratified according to the presence or absence of insulin resistance. RESULTS: = 0.01). This association remained significant after adjustment for body mass index. CONCLUSION: Women with PMOS had higher BMD across all evaluated skeletal sites than women without the syndrome. Within the PMOS group, insulin resistance was not independently associated with BMD after adjustment for body mass index, indicating that excess body weight may be a more important determinant of bone density than insulin resistance itself.Bone mass in PMOS: new insights into hyperandrogenism and hyperinsulinemia.
