Application of multidisciplinary collaboration in a quality improvement for reducing peripherally inserted central catheter associated bloodstream infections in newborns

Abstract Objective This paper aims to investigate the effect of a multidisciplinary quality improvement program on newborns with central line associated blood stream infection (CLABSI). Methods In this project, 60 newborns children with Peripherally Inserted Central Catheter (PICC) catheters hospitalized from July 2020 to July 2021 were selected as the control group, and traditional nursing methods were adopted. A total of 60 newborns with PICC catheter from July 2021 to June 2022 were selected as the intervention group, and quality management was carried out in the intervention group through multidisciplinary collaborative nursing mode. The incidence rate of CLABSI, indent time of central venous catheter, catheter complications, duration of antibiotic use and length of hospital stay were compared between the two groups. Results The CLABSI rate in the intervention group (0.267%) was significantly lower than that in the control group (0.812%). The retention time of central venous catheter in the control group [(20.63 ± 7.36)d] was significantly shorter than that in the intervention group [(26.21 ± 9.75)d], and the differences were statistically significant (all P < 0.05). The intervention group had shorter hospital stays, fewer complications, and shorter antibiotic use compared control group. There were no significant differences between the two groups in catheter complications, duration of antibiotic use, length of hospital stays, hospitalization outcome and other aspects ( P > 0.05). Conclusions Compared with routine PICC care measures, the implementation of a multidisciplinary quality improvement program can reduce the incidence of neonatal CLABSI. The program is simple and feasible, which has a significant effect on reducing the CLABSI rate and has certain clinical application value. Clinical trial number Not applicable.
