Industrial scientists in higher education: Insights from the pharmaceutical sector

Successful university-industry partnerships ensure that university curricula not only meet industry’s innovation needs but also improve students’ effectiveness, graduate outcomes, and workforce preparedness. While previous studies predominantly examined university-industry relationships from the academic side, the perspective of industrial scientists in higher education remains underexplored. In the present study, a questionnaire exploring motivations, challenges, perceived impacts, and support needs was developed and distributed to industrial researchers in the pharmaceutical industry and associated disciplines. The industrial scientists reported receiving time and support from their employers to prepare for academic activities, but indicated a need for additional support, particularly regarding time allocation, encouragement, and recognition. Pedagogic induction, secondments, and stronger initiative and recognition from universities were frequently cited as incentives that could improve their participation. Overall, a coordinated effort between industry and academia is required to support the continued involvement of industrial researchers in higher education, thereby enhancing knowledge transfer and student preparedness.
