Identifying new and emerging device, diagnostic and digital technologies for paediatric neurological trauma

Objective This horizon scanning study identified emerging digital, device and diagnostic technologies (‘HealthTech’) for children and young people with neurological trauma to inform future policy, practice and research. Method We focused on children and young people from age 28 days postbirth to 18 years, inclusive; included any device, diagnostic and digital product designed to improve health, clinical care or condition management; for any suspected or confirmed injury to the brain, spine or nervous system. We applied horizon scanning methods to detect signals of emerging innovation across ClinicalTrials.gov, funding portals and industry news sources. The initial scan was conducted in February 2023 and updated in October 2025. Results 39 technologies were identified, grouped into six clusters: cognitive function, brain health, eye movements, mobility and movement, daily participation and healthcare delivery. While technologies could be identified across the care pathway from prevention to hospital care to rehabilitation, most (19/39) focused on assessment or diagnostics, with few addressing prevention or long-term participation in daily life (n=4). Conclusion The innovation pipeline for paediatric neurological trauma is markedly smaller than for adults despite significant lifelong consequences. Technologies for prevention, rehabilitation and daily participation are particularly scarce. Horizon scanning offers a proactive approach to anticipating advances in HealthTech for children and young people.
