MEDICAL PHYSICS IN NIGERIA: CHALLENGES, OPPORTUNITIES, AND THE FUTURE OF THE PROFESSION

Medical physics is a vital discipline that applies the principles of physics to healthcare, particularly in diagnostic imaging, radiation therapy, nuclear medicine, and radiation protection. Despite its growing importance worldwide, the profession remains underdeveloped in Nigeria due to challenges such as a shortage of qualified medical physicists, limited training opportunities, inadequate infrastructure, and insufficient funding. This review examines the evolution and current status of medical physics in Nigeria, highlighting key achievements, existing challenges, and opportunities for growth. It also discusses government policies, workforce development, technological advancements, and the increasing demand for medical physics services in the country's healthcare system. Finally, the paper provides recommendations for strengthening education, research, professional practice, and policy implementation to support the sustainable development of medical physics in Nigeria. This review aims to serve as a valuable resource for students, researchers, healthcare professionals, and policymakers interested in advancing medical physics in Nigeria.
