Abstract

Event Engineering is introduced as a research program concerned not with classifying types of events, but with describing how a human being moves from encountering an event as lived experience to treating it as a structure that can be deliberately engineered. This paper, Part I of the series, addresses the necessary starting point: the event before it is engineered. It argues that a person entering an unfamiliar situation does not typically carry a complete structural representation of that situation. The event is instead first lived as a temporal sequence — entry, execution, the emergence of unanticipated conditions, a search for exit, and eventual exit — in which the exit becomes cognitively and practically available only after execution has already begun. Drawing on the ethnographic methodology literature on leaving the field, on sociological role-exit theory, and on ordinary cases of employment and marriage, the paper shows that an exit may exist objectively while remaining structurally invisible to the participant until circumstances make it relevant, and that the conditions for exit are frequently produced by what happens during execution rather than by what was known at entry. The paper deliberately withholds the constructive question of how an exit might be designed into the beginning of an event; that question is reserved for later parts of the series. Part I instead establishes the empirical and conceptual starting condition from which the rest of Event Engineering develops: the discovery that exit, in lived experience, arrives late. The central thesis is therefore: "The exit becomes visible from inside the event. Entry does not determine execution, and execution can transform the meaning and difficulty of exit." "Event Engineering does not begin by engineering the event. It begins by observing the event before engineering it."
