A review of selected Swedish contributions to instrumentation at neutron scattering facilities

Abstract The European Spallation Source in Lund, Sweden, is the next generation neutron research facility that will provide unprecedented capabilities for particle physics as well as materials and life science research through its high brightness, long-pulse neutron source and advanced instrument suite. To fully benefit from and to contribute to the build up of this facility, Swedish researchers are engaged in a number of instrument and first science projects. This review presents an overview of Swedish involvement in selected projects or proposals of projects and instruments at neutron scattering facilities. The examples highlight the extensive Swedish participation in specific instrument projects, science cases, and supporting technologies. The paper also highlights the larger scientific and strategic impact of this engagement, including capacity building, access to neutron techniques, and the strengthening of Sweden’s position within the European neutron science community to take the best advantage of the European Spallation Source.
